When NeoFinder is the better choice
I'd rather you buy the right app than the cheaper one. Pick NeoFinder if:
- Your Mac runs something older than macOS 14. DriveShelf needs macOS 14.0 or later. NeoFinder goes back to macOS 10.15.
- Your iPhone can't run iOS 26.5. DriveShelf's iPhone app needs iOS 26.5 or later. NeoFinder's iOS app runs on iOS 14 and later.
- You need thumbnails, photo and video metadata, or network drives. NeoFinder catalogs all three. DriveShelf records names, paths, sizes and dates, on physical drives only.
- You want to try before you pay. NeoFinder has a free demo limited to 10 catalogs. DriveShelf is paid up front.
- You also catalog from a Windows PC. abeMeda, a separate Windows app from another developer, can read NeoFinder catalogs. DriveShelf is Mac and iPhone only.
- You want a long track record. NeoFinder, originally called CDFinder, dates back to 1995. DriveShelf went on sale in 2026.
What DriveShelf does
Plug a drive in once. DriveShelf reads every file name, path, size and date into a catalog on your Mac — never the contents of the files.
Unplug it and put it back on the shelf. Search every catalogued drive at once, and DriveShelf tells you which physical drive has the file.
It flags files with the same name and size on different drives, so you can check them and free up a whole drive instead of buying another one.
Want the catalog on your phone? Click Sync to iPhone on the Mac, and the same catalog opens in the iPhone app — through your own iCloud account, not through me.
The limits, plainly
- It's built for physical drives — SSDs, HDDs and camera cards — not network drives (NAS).
- It isn't a backup tool. It catalogs and searches; it doesn't copy anything.
- The iPhone app shows the catalog your Mac built. It can't catalog drives on its own.
